    Adaptive rendezvous of multiple mobile agents with nonlinear dynamics and preserved network connectivity

    This paper investigates rendezvous of multiple nonlinear dynamical mobile agents with a virtual leader in a dynamic proximity network. It is assumed that only a fraction of agents in the group have access to the information on the position and velocity of the virtual leader. To avoid fragmentation, a bounded connectivity-preserving rendezvous algorithm is proposed for the multi-agent systems. Under the assumption that the initial network is connected, local adaptation strategies for the rendezvous algorithm are introduced that enable all agents to synchronize with the virtual leader even when only one agent is informed, without requiring any knowledge of the agent dynamics. Simulation results on an example are given to numerically verify the theoretical results. © 2011 Asian Control Association.published_or_final_versio

    Optimal control for semi-active suspension with inerter

    The benefits of the inerter in passive suspension have been well demonstrated. To investigate suspension performances with the inerter in semi-active suspension, eight well studied passive suspension configurations with a parallel connection to a variable shock absorber are analyzed in this paper. By applying the optimal control theory, an optimal solution for each configuration is obtained and numerically solved by the forward/backward sweep method. The result shows that under the considered performance measure, the use of inerter can improve ride comfort in general, where the effect can even be significant for some specific configurations, but has no obvious advantage in road holding and suspension travel performance compared with the conventional semi-active suspension. © 2012 Chinese Assoc of Automati.published_or_final_versio

    This paper investigates the application of semi-active inerter in semi-active suspension. A semi-active inerter is defined as an inerter whose inertance can be adjusted within a finite bandwidth by on-line control actions. A force-tracking approach to designing semi-active suspension with a semi-active inerter and a semi-active damper is proposed, where the target active control force derived by LQR control in the 'Reciprocal State-Space' (RSS) framework is tracked by controlling the semi-active damping coefficient and semi-active inertance. One of the advantages of the proposed method is that it is straightforward to use the acceleration information in the controller design. Simulation results demonstrate that the semi-active suspension with a semi-active inerter and a semi-active damper can track the target active control force much better than the conventional semi-active suspension (which only contains a semi-active damper) does. As a consequence, the overall performance in ride comfort, suspension deflection and road holding is improved, which effectively demonstrates the necessity and the benefit of introducing semi-active inerter in vehicle suspension.preprin

    ATM-based TH-SSMA network for multimedia PCS

    Personal communications services (PCS) promise to provide a variety of information exchanges among users with any type of mobility, at any time, in any place, through any available device. To achieve this ambitious goal, two of the major challenges in the system design are: i) to provide a high-speed wireless subsystem with large capacity and acceptable quality-of-service (QoS) and ii) to design a network architecture capable of supporting multimedia traffic and various kinds of user mobility. A time-hopping spread-spectrum wireless communication system called ultra-wide bandwidth (UWB) radio is used to provide communications that are low power, high data rate, fade resistant, and relatively shadow free in a dense multipath environment. Receiver-signal processing of UWB radio is described, and performance of such communications systems, in terms of multiple-access capability, is estimated under ideal multiple-access channel conditions. A UWB-signal propagation experiment is performed using the bandwidth in excess of 1 GHz in a typical modern office building in order to characterize the UWB-signal propagation channel. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the UWB radio and its robustness in a dense multipath environment. In this paper, an ATM network is used as the backbone network due to its high bandwidth, fast switching capability, flexibility, and well-developed infrastructure. To minimize the impact caused by user mobility on the system performance, a hierarchical network-control architecture is postulated. A wireless virtual circuit (WVC) concept is proposed to improve the transmission efficiency and simplify the network control in the wireless subsystem. The key advantage of this network architecture and WVC concept is that the handoff can be done locally most of the time, due to the localized behavior of PCS users.published_or_final_versio

    In this paper, we consider the realizability problem of n-port resistive networks containing 2n terminals. A necessary and sufficient condition for any real symmetric matrix to be realizable as the admittance of an n-port resistive network containing 2n terminals is obtained. The condition is based on the existence of a parameter matrix. We then focus on a three-port resistive network containing six terminals. A necessary and sufficient condition is derived for any real symmetric matrix to be realizable as the admittance of a three-port resistive network containing six terminals and at most five positive elements, whose topological structure is properly restricted. © 2013 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Overexpression Of Chd1l Is Positively Associated With Metastasis Of Lung Adenocarcinoma And Predicts Patients Poor Survival

    CHD1L (chromodomain helicase/ATPase DNA binding protein 1-like gene) has been demonstrated as an oncogene in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), however, the role of CHD1L in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tumorigenesis hasn't been elucidated. In this study, the expression and amplification status of CHD1L were examined by immunohistochemistry and fluorescence in situ hybridization respectively in 248 surgically resected NSCLCs. The associations between CHD1L expression and clinicopathologic features and the prognostic value of CHD1L were analyzed. Overexpression and amplification of CHD1L was found in 42.1% and 17.7% of NSCLCs, respectively. The frequency of CHD1L overexpression (53.2% vs. 28.1%, P = 0.002) and amplification (25.2% vs. 8.2%, P = 0.020) in adenocarcinoma (ADC), was much higher than that in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). CHD1L overexpression was associated closely with ascending pN status (P < 0.001), advanced clinical stage (P = 0.001) and tumor distant metastasis (P = 0.001) in ADCs, but not in SCCs. For the whole cohort and ADC patients, univariate survival analysis demonstrated a significant association of CHD1L overexpression with shortened survival; and in multivariate analysis, CHD1L overexpression was evaluated as a independent predictor for overall survival and distant metastasis free survival. These results suggested that overexpression of CHD1L is positively associated with tumor metastasis of lung ADC, and might serve as a novel prognostic biomarker and potential therapeutic target for lung ADC patients.published_or_final_versio

    A comparison of model validation techniques for audio-visual speech recognition

    This paper implements and compares the performance of a number of techniques proposed for improving the accuracy of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems. As ASR that uses only speech can be contaminated by environmental noise, in some applications it may improve performance to employ Audio-Visual Speech Recognition (AVSR), in which recognition uses both audio information and mouth movements obtained from a video recording of the speaker’s face region. In this paper, model validation techniques, namely the holdout method, leave-one-out cross validation and bootstrap validation, are implemented to validate the performance of an AVSR system as well as to provide a comparison of the performance of the validation techniques themselves. A new speech data corpus is used, namely the Loughborough University Audio-Visual (LUNA-V) dataset that contains 10 speakers with five sets of samples uttered by each speaker. The database is divided into training and testing sets and processed in manners suitable for the validation techniques under investigation. The performance is evaluated using a range of different signal-to-noise ratio values using a variety of noise types obtained from the NOISEX-92 dataset
